Working with Chris

I work collaboratively with community and swimming groups, government bodies and other organisations, bringing the specialist skills needed to kickstart, develop, fund and deliver swim sites. Usually, I usually focus on projects in their early stages, working with collaborators to establish the business case or strategy, preparing a brief and then developing a concept design. Roughly speaking, this work follows the RIBA Plan of Work Stages 0 to 2, but every project is different and I adjust my scope accordingly.

Finding what’s possible

I bring practical advice when the project is still a dream, preparing feasibility reports to establish what’s possible – and viable – on the site, advising on funding opportunities and creating a timeline for the project. I can also make introductions to other likeminded people in the swimming network.

Setting the vision

This stage is about developing a more detailed brief, connecting the business case with project ambition. I advise on pool types, giving options based on water type, the quality of the water and potential users (swimmers, kayak, scuba and so on). I also help with site selection, taking into account accessibility, tides and proximity to other resources such as cafes and toilets.

Creating a concept

From this stage onwards, I usually act as an adviser to the client or collaborate with Studio Octopi in order to gain pre-application planning advice. I work with you to bring the vision to life, in the form of masterplan or concept design proposals, and consider how we might work with existing heritage buildings (or responsibly build new structures). I also look at how tidal pools can be integrated with existing marine infrastructure such as sea defences, and be used to enhance local biodiversity.

Taking the next steps

Once the design concept is in place, I will advise on how the team should be structured to take the project forward to planning. I can also introduce you to other trusted specialists providing the cost, planning and architectural services needed to deliver the project beyond planning.
